Description

Scirpus isolepis forms graceful, fountain-like clumps of fine, thread-like leaves, reaching an ultimate height of about 20 cm (8 inches) and spreading up to 60 cm (24 inches). In mid to late summer, each leaf blade is topped with tiny silvery-white flower heads, creating a shimmering, fibre-optic effect. These flowers are followed by small brown seedheads, adding seasonal interest to the plant

Growing Conditions

• Water depth: 0–10 cm (0–4 inches), suitable for shallow pond margins or bog gardens
• Soil: Moist or boggy soils; can tolerate submerged conditions with the crown up to 10 cm below water
• Light: Full sun to semi-shade
• Maintenance: Virtually no maintenance is required; tidy dead foliage in autumn

Propagation can be achieved by division or seed, typically from mid-spring to early summer. For pond planting, use a planting basket with heavy garden loam or aquatic soil, ensuring the rhizome crown is level with the soil surface
