Bare root Hedging Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

Bareroot hedging is a versatile and cost effective way to plant a hedge. The individual plants will look very uninspiring to start with, little more that sticks!

But come Spring they will be bursting with lush new foliage and will grow quickly.  The ideal time to plant a hedge is from October to February in the dormant season.

The ever-popular beech hedging is admired for its magnificent foliage, fluttery golden-green in spring which brighten and then turn a rich copper colour in autumn.

Beech plants are deciduous, but as a hedge the striking winter leaves will remain in place making it a wonderful alternative to evergreen hedging with year-round interest, plus giving shelter to wildlife

As it is a relatively fast grower, it is best to trim the hedge in late summer/early autumn so it retains a dense shape which will help keep the foliage over winter

It is suitable for normal, clay or chalk soil in full sun or semi-shade for inland, coastal or exposed sites, but is not the best option for heavy clay or wet sites.

Also, it can be grown in windy sites to act as a windbreak, but be aware that it may not keep all of its lovely copper winter leaves.
